Does anyone on here attend the Bariatric Clinic at Hope hospital or Aintree hospital? I am wanting to know what happens there any information gladly received.

Hiya
Sorry can't help you with that one, hopefully someone will be along soon xx

Hey Charlie

I attended Hope for bariatric advice, its where I started out on this journey. Nearly there now, see my surgeon next Thursday and hopefully will have a date for surgery pretty soon after that. :D

Ask me any question's you like and I'll try my best to answer them!

Hi Cat

Thanks for your reply. How long did you wait for an appointment at the clinic? What happened first ie do they put you on a diet? How long did you have to attend for? Sorry for the questions anything that you know will be helpful. When I look it up on the internet it goes to surgery but I was lead to believe it was a diet service.....thanks Linda

Hi charlie girl, I was refered to Hope by my GP to what was the weight management clinic but at the time of referal it was under review as the dr that ran it had just retired, I waited about 7 weeks and arrived home one day to find a sealed carrier bag on my door step. Inside was a plastic container and 2 lots of blood sheets, the plastic container was for a 24 hr urine collection. Later that day(monday) i got a phone call from appointment asking if i could attend clinic on the friday. I went to hope on the wednesday and had my bloods done 5 min of a job at the diabetic clinic(no im not diabetic) and took my urine collection with me.
On the friday i was weight and measured and had my blood pressure done before going in to see a specialist registrar. she took a history from me and was going through the options when Dr new came in. I had already lost 4 stone using lipotrim but had plateaued and was expecting to be told to go back on that but due to my BMI of 50and having high blood pressure he said that the only thing he would offer me was a bypass.
the following day i got an appointment for a sleep analasis and dr new has refered me onto the psycologist and surgeon whilst waiting for funding from my PCT.

Hi thanks for that its very insightful, I bet you are so pleased to get your referral. I was told that you need to attend there for 2 years but if after six months there was no change then you would be referred. What concerns me is do you have to attend there once a month or more often as its hard for me to get the time due to working 10 hours shifts and living 50 miles away......keep me posted on what happens next and good luck... xx

hi charliegirl good luck with ur journey hun xxx

Hi thanks georgina, the concensus is if you dont ask you dont get and the NHS will try to fob you off a different route to save money. If I could find an alternative that fitted with my lifestyle (the long shifts I work) and I lost weight and got healthier I would not be considering the surgery. I think some people think its the lazy way out and I dont for a minute believe that. If it was a case of eat less and exercise more and it would come off I would be doing just that......thanks for your support xx

I agree Charlie, theres a reason for each of us why we're turning to surgery, and anyone who thinks its an easy way out is a fool! even if it were, whats wrong with taking the easy way if it works? Some people are just ignorant of whats truly involved. If they could see my husband in tears worried he's going to lose me they wouldn't say it was easy.

Hi Shelbel my son is not too happy that I am trying to get this done, he never says much but when I told him I had been referred by my GP he said that was for fat people and could I not take up swimming, I know its his way I saying he does not think I need it and would prefer me not to have it, but I think anyone that is considering this op will have considered the implications and concerns it brings with it. My problem is I never feel full, I eat healthy and there is not much left I could cut out but I never ever seem full, if they could give me a switch to flick after I had eaten that stopped me wanting more I would go for it.... xx

Hi Charlie

Mine was pretty much the same as HC's. I went to my GP to ask for a referral for bariatric surgery, got referred to the weight management service which was part of Hope but at a different place. I had a few meetings with a lovely lady who is one of the dieticians but she said pretty early on that she would be referring me for the surgery. I didn't have to do a diet as such, just to try and keep my weight down. I'd already been down the Cambridge, medication, slimming clubs route plenty of times to no avail (good losses but then just piled it all back on and more besides)
I then saw the wonderful Dr New at Hope (after the plastic urine collection tub and blood tests!!) who recommended me straight away and here I now am, with only 4 days to go until my appointment to see my surgeon in Leeds - I can't wait! :D
Hope this helps a little, if you have any more questions fire away!

Cat that is a great help, I will speak to my GP on monday, my problem is maintaining my weight it keeps increasing despite tablets, slimming clubs and the gym so it may be beneficial for me. Good luck for your surgery and keep me posted...

((hugs))

Don't worry Charlie, so does mine. I've put on nearly 2 stones since I first went to the dietcian. It takes alot more to fill me these day's than it used to and my eating habits are totally out of control.

If surgery is want you want, then I hope it all goes well for you. Keep me posted on you get on x

hi charlie, i had my bypass done just ova 1 year ago and so far have lost just ova 8 stone, its the best thing i have ever done well worth it, i can vouch thats its not the easy way out it takes a life long commitment once u have had it done good luck xxx

Hi
Well I went to see my GP in early December last year and I first went to the dietician on about the 10th February. I know I'm lucky to have things move to quick for me, some people have to wait years.

Hi Cat

I spoke to my GP's secretary she knew nothing about Baratric clinic at hope but said she would call them and find out if I could be referred directly. When she got back to me she confirmed that I could and that they would expect me to follow a "plan" for 6 months and this may or may not lead to me being referred for banding. She advised me to speak to my GP which I am doing in the morning to get his advice. I may even ask him to send supplement letter to the PCT as I never go out anywhere except work and I was always gadding about just feel too uncomfortable. Do you think its worth mentioning that I get down about it, dont want to say depressed in case they shove me on medication, I feel low but only because nothing fits and when the sun shines I am covered in long tops and trousers....with shoes that cripple after an hour or so due to fat feet expanding.....its a good job I can laugh, I feel I have this tiny little head on a big round body although people say at 16 stone and 5'7" I am not too bad, my health is suffering. My mate is 5'2" and 15 stone but she has never been slim and her body is used to carrying the weight so she does not get breathless mine went on pretty quick and my lungs have not caught up.....Linda x

Hi Linda
I was told exactly the same as you. Went to my Gp to be referred but she knew nothing about it so rung me back, said that Salford had introduced new rules regarding weight loss surgery and that I would need to attend the weight clinic (dietician) So I got my appointment and off I went, she was lovely lady but said it would be a 6 month process where I would have to show commitment to losing weight if I wanted to be considered. I came out feeling really down as I wasn't expecting to be told that due to a friend who'd recently had surgery and didn't have to go through this process, but I accepted it and went on with things hopign at the end of the 6 months they would consider me. However at my 2nd appointment with the dietician ( different lady) she said that I'd already fulfilled the criteria (BMI, tried other weight loss methods etc) and was happy to put a tick in the box from her side, she also said that I would need a tick from a psychologist and a tick from Dr New (who sends on the referral to your surgeon) In the end I didn't need to see the
psychologist (another process change I think) and just saw Dr New instead who said he was happy to refer me on to my surgeon. It was only at this stage I got involved with the PCT just to confirm my funding was available.
You must mention exactly how you are feeling, just because you are not on tablets doesn't mean you can't say you are depressed. I'm very down most of the time, I feel depressed every time I think about how I have ended up and have had time off for it in the past, but I'm not on tablets as I know theres light at the end of the tunnel. But I know some of us aren't that lucky and do need the tablets. Mention everything, at every appointment I've had I end up having a cry beacuse you have to be totally honest with them and sometimes that hurts. Do plenty of research, show them that you know your stuff and how this could benefit you - mention any family history, my Mum and her side of the family have nearly all got/had diabetes so that was something I mentioned, and most of all be totally honest and tell them exactly how you feel. They can only say no....or yes! Ha ha.
Sorry for the long post but hope it helps. :)

Hi Cat thanks so much for that post it is very inspiring for me. I am seeing Dr New as well and I agree you have to be honest with them, I always speak from the heart (gets me into trouble at times) people always know where they stand when your honest. I do get very down because I wont socialise due to not being able to dress comfortable or nice, I dont have a man in my life because I could not let one see me naked just now, I am not yet 50 and married ever so young so feel I now want a bit of me time to do things and feel good about myself. I refuse point blank to have any photos taken which my kids dont like because its memories I am depriving them off for in the future. I hope I get a nice lady like you did but whatever they say if it has to be 6 months I will do it and I am very good talking about how I feel I think thats why my GP is supporting me as he understands where I am coming from....keep in touch ((hugs))
