Has anyone been on Metformin and Sitaglytin for diabeties when undertaking their pre-op diet?

I have been given and read conflicting information as to whether I continue as normal, or stop taking the Sitaglytin.

Could really do with some first hand experience please how people managed their sugars whilst on the milk diet. Thanks

I stopped metformin and my insulin on the LRD...
I was told to check bloods daily still and it dramatically changed
I'm 14 weeks out now and still off metformin and insulin and my bloods are fine ..
Check with your gp tho xx
I did nothing to manage my sugars it did it all itself xx

Thanks Tracey. I have spoken to two different GP's who specialise in diabetes, and a doctor on the team. All say different! Great you are off the meds :)

I am in the middle of the pre-op diet now - 1 week to go. I am taking 1 pint of skimmed milk and 6 - 10 yogurts a day (depending on the calorie content of the yogurt) I take insulin 4 times a day and am on liraglutide injections and canagliflozin tablets for my diabetes. I was advised to be in close contact with my diabetic specialist nurse through the pre-op period. Following her advice I have been testing my blood sugar regularly and reduced my insulin a lot. The tablets I have continued taking as normal. I had a few scary hypos in the first week but have been fine since.
Do you have a blood sugar tester? That made it a lot easier for me. Also I have learnt to take less diabetes medicine rather than more. Having the hypos was very unpleasant and meant I had to take in extra glucose, which messed up the whole Liver Reducing Diet thing! Hope that helps :)

Sorry you had a bad first week, but that info is very helpful as I have been trying to explain to my daughter who lives 300 miles away that I really don't want to travel whilst doing the pre-op, and why. I do have a sugar tester which I normally only use once a day unless I am ill, so trying to get into the habit of using it more. Out of interest are you Type 1 or 2, and also how have you got on with the Liragulide? I tried it and it did reduce my sugars but I ate for England and felt awful. I still don't have a date, although I am near the top of the list, so haven't started pre-op yet. I have an appointment with my diabetes nurse at the end of the month and will try talking to her again. Because I attend a rural practice they have little experience of WLS.

I hope your op goes well and your liver is in good shape. :)

I am glad to have been helpful.
I use the sugar tester 4 times a day, before every meal and before bed - and will also use it if I am feeling unwell. I need to know if I am having a hypo or not. I am a type 2 diabetic and have been using insulin since 2002. The liraglutide does seem to help control my sugars, and didn't make me hungry, but I have been very prone to thrush since I started on it, so I am hoping I will be able to stop it after the op. I really needed to keep a close eye on my blood sugars once I started the pre-op diet as they dropped very sharply indeed. I used to take 19 units of novarapid insulin before breakfast and lunch and 30 before tea. 50 units of lantus before bed. Now I take 5 units before meals and 15 before bed. However the good news is that I have already lost my target weight for the op and I still have 5 days of the diet to go. 13.8 pounds gone! :)
