Feels like a breakthrough

Oh wow, just under 5 weeks post op and feel so pleased because for lunch yesterday (because I stupidly left my made up lunch at home), I ate one half of a wholemeal, egg mayo butty with no crusts of course. Took me a good 20 mins to eat the little pieces I broke off and chewed forever, but really didnt feel bad at all!!

Does that sound about ok at almost 5 weeks friends?

xx:)

I am only Three weeks post op tomorrow, I'm still on Liquids and not allowed sloppies until next week. then I am on sloppies for another four weeks. not allowed solids until week nine.

I am not sure if you can eat what you have at you're stage as i say my surgeons regime is very strict. I would air on the side of caution regarding some foods as the stomach is a muscle and it can be stretched. Over time your pouch will stretch but I personally wouldn't want to push it at such a early stage.

But if your comfortable with eating bread and your surgeon/post op health team are happy then thats great.

I was on liquids for three days, then pureed for two weeks, then sloppy for two weeks then normal food taking trial and error to find what suited...we are all advised differently...I would not worry you ate sensibly and took your time and did not over do it so well done chick...xx

wow claire i bet it felt fantastic to eat 'normal food' i only managed one piece of rolled up ham (approx 45gms) spread with a little herb/garlic philly.

tonight i have a slow cocked chilli to eat, hope i manage a decent portion as i know my appertite has been low right from the start.

I agree with CHarliegirl, all surgeons seem to offer different advice and it would obviously be sensible to follow your surgeons advice as closely as you can. But it sounds like you took your time, and didnt dump. Dont be tempted to rush things though hun x

As all surgeons are different you should try and stick to what they say, as a one off and as you didn't have any effects great, you were sensible and took your time and left the crust, but your surgeon knows best so try and stick to it. I can only imagine how hard it will be to go through the stages so it is only in my opinion

I think I had bread first at about week 6 but it was toasted. I have since tried untoasted bread but I just don't like the feeling I get with it in my pouch. As everyone said before me, go by your docs recommendations. However, we all find our own way to eat and our own 'right' time to transition. Just don't let your impatience tell your stomach when it is ready, let your stomach tell you and you should be fine. Go slow and listen for any signs that the food is upsetting your pouch because when you irritate the pouch it can take days to get back to 'normal' eating.

Best of luck hun,
Nic;)

Hi Claire, I had the same at 4 weeks post op (at work and forgot lunch lol) and was fine. I'm still fine with bread as long as you chew it properly it's not a problem.

I've not eaten bread since before my op - now over 6 months, i tried once and it swelled and i ended up chcuking it back up, since then i've not bothered, the only bread i find i can now stomach (strangely) is a Mcd's fillet o fish (which i quite enjoy from time ot time)
Quiet frankly i can live quite well without eating bread, i've found there's plenty of other lunch alternatives to bread, and i'm happy i've kicked the addiction as it was one of my biggest desires immidiately post op.

I'm almost three weeks post op and have been eating things that officially maybe I shouldn't. But, I mean things like a chicken tikka sandwich spread...instead of blending it into something vile looking, I just chew and chew and then 20 more chews for luck!!! In my mind, that food is then as soft as it would be pureed and it varies things up a little bit. I'm not taking any risks, I just really think before eating.

I even sucked a few quavers to death the other night whilst watching an Indiana Jones film!!!!!!!!!!

Try spreading it on cheese crackers and eating it that way, or you can try other sandwich fillers, pate or fish paste, exchange bread for crackers.
Its ok to eat this stuff providing you chew it to a slurry and you go easy, your pouch will soon let you know if its not happy :D

Its a fair point Richard. For some people bread is a problem food, and they may prefer to just avoid it completely. I don't have it often, but find it helpful that I can, especially if I am on a training course and it's a provided buffet! Mind you today when that happened I just didn't fancy a load of bread so picked the sliced meats off lol.

Lisa the image of you sucking the quavers made me laugh....I did it once with some chillii doritos just to get a spicy taste in my mouth....

I have eaten the odd slice of bread but sometimes the feeling it gives me afterwards out weighs the food. I have switched to crackers instead. If I do have bread I ensure that it is very good quality and less likely to turn to dough in my stomach...xx

hmm crackers time for my to try some of those i have cottage cheese i can top them with, but i do not fancy eating it on its own. Just not sure about trying them yet lol chicken me

I had the sandwich filler on its own, didn;t put it on any bread at all, just fancied something a bit spicy and for my 3 meals a day i try to heave dead healthy stuff but I got the filler just for a snack. I was sick of jelly, yoghurt, custard cos i'm not really a sweet eater. I just have a spoon of the chicken tikka filler on its own mid-afternoon and it was lovely, I admit I am being very careful of how I eat it.

Richard, I did take ur advice on the water biscuit with melted cheese and branston on.........wow, I think that will stay even once i'm on normal food, it was lovely

hi lisa are u able to have crackers yet, i had my op the day b4 u and am only able to have pureed food yuk!! not my most favorite cuisine, im dyin to have something i can bitexx

Lesley,

Richard (silversurfer) told me he used to get water biscuits and melt cheese on and chew chew chew cos they turn to mush when you do. It turned things around for me cos i needed to chew something and it was lovely.

I find that if i have something like that, i have to sit at table and eat it cos once i had one watching telly and cos i wasn't paying attention I swallowed it a bit sooner than I should have done and it hurt going down. As long as u really really chew it, its fine and tastes fab too x x x

Dont worry swallowing only hurts at the moment because your only a few weeks post op and things are still healing inside, i eat BIG mouthfulls now fairly fast, and to be honest i dont really have to chew the food to mush unless its really hard like dry chicken or steak. So it does and will get back to normal.

Think outside the box, on the sloppy mush stage you can eat anything that you can turn to mush in your mouth, so soft mash, pata, cheese, biscuits, crackers, fish pie etc etc ! but do go very easy and very slowly and if it hurts then stop eating it, give it a week and try again !

Oh just thought of another one for you sloppy stagers.......Nachos :D

You'll only manage a little, you will only absorb 50% and you will feel like a normal person again, yet be losing weight ! lol :D

Do you mean to say i can have my slow-cooked sloppy chilli but dip a couple of nachos in?!?!?!

You are the god of soft stage treats!!!!!!!
