Gastric Sleeve

Hi All

Just wondering if anyone here has had the gastric sleeve and where you got it done about. Also how much did it cost. I'm thinking about getting this done either that or the bypass with Mr Ammori. Does he do the sleeve?

I've been in touch with Cosmetic Bliss in Czech Republic who do the sleeve but the prices are going up from 1 October.

Any advice and comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Andrea

PS I'm a sweet eater and love ice-cream thats why I think the band is a definite no no.

Hi Andrea

Im a bander but have heard good things about both Cosmetic Bliss and Dr Ammori.

Im sure someone who has been at the hands of either will be along soon with some advice!

Maz x

Mine was on the NHS so not sure of cost.

Had it in Sheffield by Dr. Ackroyd

Hi, if you click on to one of the adds at the top of the page (just above your post) you can find out anything you want to know. There at the bottom of the page aswell.
Good luck

OMG - Never ever go abroad for weight loss surgery. The NHS here is left to pick up the pieces of ops gone wrong abroad. Don't go abroad. Go on the NHS here instead. Please!!!

i could't agree more.
You get the after care here, and average waiting time is about 9 months.

Most people with sleeves can still eat sweet things. If you are a sweet addict then the RNY bypass is often the recommended wls as dumping can be quite an aversion. Speak to your surgeon about it. The sleeve is purely restrictive, a few people do dump with it, but this is not common.

I too would never contemplate wls or any surgery for that matter abroad. But lots of people have and been fine - down to personal choice...

Good luck.

Hi Andrea
Sorry i can't help with the sleeve question but i too am( or was) a big sweet eater couldn't go a day without chocolate so i opted for the bypass and travelled from Glasgow to Manchester to have it done by Mr Ammori (privately) I know when i looked into there weren't many experienced bariatric surgeons in Glasgow not sure about Edinburgh though. Mr Ammori came highly recommended and i can't sing his praises enough. I'm 2 weeks post op and have had no pain what so ever. Good luck with your decision there is always someone here to help xx

All ops need pre-surgical care and investigations, and also very importantly post-op care and back-up. The NHS here, and also reputable private surgical teams here have a vested interest in only giving a patient the most tip-top care. Ignore the fancy websites and brochures of places abroad. Unless a patient is intending to stay in that particular country for several years post-op, it is important for peace of mind to have a major op done in the country of permanent residence.

Thanks for all your replies, very supportive as always.
Allie - who did you book your op through. I've looked into it up here but would need to travel to Manchester to Mr Ammori. I've heard he is the best there is.

Hi Andrea
I went through Marcus Landuer cosmetic surgery ( also specialise in weight loss surgery) i found it going through google but i'm sure i can find the details if you would like them. I travelled without any problems so don't let that worry you. Mr Ammori is well worth it x

I spoke to Marcus Landauer the other day. I've also been speaking to Surgicare who use Mr Ammori. I don't think Landauer have much aftercare or am I wrong?? How long were you in hospital? Did you travel or your own or take someone with you?

I have a 6 week, 6 month and annual check up through them, also was given phone numbers, email address to call anytime to Hospital team. Never tried anyone else to be honest as given the distance after care was'nt going to be easy anyway. Hubby and i drove down the night before, i was operated on the fri lunchtime and was out on Sun moring, Journey back up was fine just stopped every hour to stretch my legs and get some fluid on board x

did you go down before hand to meet and have a chat/consultation?

Sorry for all the questions but its so useful asking someone who has been there. My husband is worried about it but I just feel I have spent the last 21 years dieting (I'm 35) and don't want to spend the rest of my life battling food and my weight. Saying that my mum and dad weren't happy either, they seem to think that I should just exercise and watch what I eat - don't they realise I know all of that but still end up fatter than ever.

Hi Andrea, have you tried getting funding on the nhs for your op?? If not, why not try going to your gp and speaking with them about it. The sleeve is getting more popular now but I don't think it would help you much if you are a sweet eater. The sleeve is more like a portion controller and is very effective for weight loss but you are still able to get the wrong foods down if you are not careful. Good luck in whichever you chose. Lots of research into all options and you will make the right decisionxxx

You will find a lot of us on here have had the same reactions to our decision most of it comes from worry and insecurity but this is about you and now that i am post op they are relieved and very interested. Yes i had a consultation at Spire Hospital Manchester with Mr Ammori before my op i paid for that before i went, then on the day of surgery i sent Mr Ammori his half of the money and paid the hospital on the day of check in. Don't worry about the questions this is a really helpful site with lots of wonderful people and we all support each other x

I had a sleeve last weds at leeds nuffield with a Mr Hayden, Im only a few days post opp but what I have noticed I cant stand sugar in my tea tastes grosse and I used to have 2 ! and I tried an ice lolly today and again it was too sweet didnt like it at all, so heres hoping I dont like chocholate no more either !

My surgeon Mr hayden at Leeds was great very carefull and I overheard a conversation with him and the nurses He has prescribed me 6 weeks worth of the blood thinning injections after the opp, and the nurses said all the other surgeons only did a week ! his reply was blood clots form when the injections stop, so he does 6 weeks for this reason !

as or cost approx £10000 to £12000 depending on ur bmi

hope this helps

I'm a Duodenal Switcher which is the sleeve plus reconfiguring the intestines.

The sleeve does provide restriction because 75% of your stomach is removed. However, the stomach does bounce back a bit (only to about 1/2 its size) so the restriction lessens as time goes by (which is why I had the 'switch' part).

The RNY (gastric bypass) might be something you wish to consider as well, however only about 50% of people 'dump' so you can't always count on that to prevent you from eating sugar.

Thank you all for the great posts. I'm going to look into the bypass with Mr Ammori as long as I can get the money sorted!!
