Help - I'm new here!!

Thanks Richard and Shel - really helpful! My hubby really doesn't want me to go abroad and I must admit I don't fancy it. I'm too impatient to wait for the NHS and don't want to have to explain my reasons to 101 people! Am hoping to book a consultation asap. How long did you have to wait for your ops??

Mine was NHS, so from seeing my GP to having surgery was about 20 months in total.

Hi Grom, i'm a newbie too:D:D

Hi Grom,

Welcome to minis. Im new too. I had my band fitted privately last friday with surgicare. They were fabulous as was my surgeon Dr Ammori. I would recommend surgicare to anyone considering wls. I decided to go private to avoid the long nhs waiting list too. I have never been treated so nicely in a hospital before. They were so friendly and helpful. i never felt like a nuisence once like the staff at nhs make you feel sometimes. Ive never gone private before but ill never look back. With surgicare you get 3 fills included in the price and 2 years aftercare.

Hope this helps a bit.

Hi Grom,
I went one week between initial consultation to surgery!! Thats how impatient I was lol. I'm in manchester area and had it done in stockport which wont be too far from you in lancs. If your interested in it call Lynne on: 0161 945 8688 or 08450179739. Tell her Rachel gave you the number to call. I had my band fitted on 28th nov 2008. They explain everything really well and you get to ask the surgeon everything you need to know face to face. I had 100% fantastic experience from start to finish. Up to you, just thought it could help if you want the info.

Kind regards

Hi Grom, welcome to Minis. I had my band fitted in July privately and don't regret it for a second. I went through Spire in Norwich but I know there are lots of banders on here who have been banded at Dolan Park too. The only thing I would say with going private is think about the cost of the fills when opting for your package. I have three included in mine and have so far only had one. Others on here have had many more fills in a similar timescale, and if you are paying out for each one this can add up. I had my consultation in early June and the op six weeks later and that was delayed at my request - it could have been done faster. Good luck with whatever you decide and any questions just shout - there are people on here in all stages of their journeys with interesting stories to tell and loads of helpful advice xx

Thanks Rachel that's really helpful! I have contacted so many different companies I can't remember if I have spoken to them or not. I have a consultation booked with WLS Group - they charge £1,000 less if you have it done in Preston and say they include two years aftercare - which I presume includes band fills but will have to check. If everything is ok and hubby agrees (!!) I cold have it done on Jan 13th! Like you now I have made my mind up I just want to get on with it! Let me know how you get on!

What really interests me is how people cope with all the time they don't spend eating! We know we got this size because we eat for reasons other than hunger - boredom, sadness etc - and I wonder how I will cope without my 'comfort eating'.

Thanks for the advice!
They have an open day next sat so I have booked my consultation! Hoping to go ahead with surgery in the new year - am so excited! Just hope hubby is happy with everything he hears altho I think he is pretty much agreed that it's a good thing for me to do. How are you doing with your band? How much do you want to lose?

Grom - I am from Burnley. I worked with my GP and had the refferal to the trust for funding in August. I received a letter in September asking me for a statement as to why I felt I should be given the funding and hey presto had a Gastric Bypass at the Alex on 20th November by Dr Senapati [My hero]. So don't be put off by thinking of a long wait. I must admit I had been researching for some time and I have a very good GP. Good luck and don't give up - it was the besy thing I have ever done.....

Thanks Cleggy!
That sounds really good - and so quick! Some people on here seeme to have waited years rather than months. My gp isn't brilliant and the best she could come up with was vouchers for slimming world!
My hubby is very supportive and happy for us to use our savings to go privately, so hopefully going in November.
How long did you have to have off work for the bypass? I was going for the band as I thought it was a shorter recovery time. Do you get a sick note from the hospital? Well done on progress to date - keep me posted!:wave_cry:

God Cleggy that was quick!!!:eek:I went to my gp in July and she referred me and got the funding, and I only have an appointment with the consultant next week, and I am in Preston so not too far from you:D

Grom - I had my op on the 20th November and being self-employed needed to get back to work asap. I started back Tuesday just gone [Had staples out Monday] but have taken it very easy this week and had all the weekend off. Not sure about Sick notes - I wasn't offered one though. Whichever route you decide to take just do it - I wish I had thought about this years ago. Good luck!

Regarding sick notes, my surgeon/hospital offered them, you just needed to tell them when you were getting ready for discharge. I didn't need one but others on my ward did and it was simple to get them.:)

Candie - Where are you haveing your consultation and whom with?

like phatgirl (sme hospital) i was asked if i needed a sick note but was in the fortunate position to be self employed but contracted and on a 8 week retainer so didnt need one. saying that i went on a training course the tue after i had my op on the thur and have been doing some light work for the past 2 weeks.

hi grom, i have just been reading your thread and would just like to say that i had my band fitted with mr sigurdsson at dolan park just over three weeks ago. i booked the wga package and even though they dont offer any aftercare the hospital and staff were absolutely fantastic along with the surgeon. i like you researched all options and once surgery was over then booked one years aftercare with the weightloss surgery group, which gives you support from a nutritionist and wendy their bariatric nurse also unlimited fills. i went to london last sunday for my first consultation with wendy and she was brilliant, ive also contacted them a couple of times this week with different concerns and they really put you at ease, i am just waiting now for the new year for my first band fill. hope all goes well for you just make sure you research things well and go with whoever you feel comfortable with, i felt at ease with mr sigurdsson which is why i went with him.
