my surgeon hasnt lost any of his patients yet, these are just statistics and the majority of people get through there ops, yes it can happen but its rare x
 
Oh dear, how very sad. Any operation carries a risk to the patient and in a few sad cases the patient does die. The lady in the articale at 24 stone would have been considered high risk on this basis only.

Try not to dwell on the negatives but think of the positives that will come out of this and how this will improve your quality of life.

it is tragic and very worrying. Im a pre op bypasser and I do worry that something will happen and I wont come out the other side. I have written letters to my hubby and daughter in case it does happen, BUT the problems I will ahve if I carry on the way I am at the moment far outweigh the risk of surgery.

I know it doesnt take away the fear, not at all, but look at the amount of healthy and happy people on this forum for a start that have got through it, some have had a harder time recovering than others.

Im taking the risk with no second thoughts:)
 
Hi, i'm the same age as the woman that died and i'v been fat for over 30 years, but as sad as it is, i'm still going for it.
 
There's always a risk with any kind of surgery involving a general aneasthetic and they make sure you're fully aware of this - that's why you have to sign a consent form.However as others have said you have to weigh up the future you will have with and without the surgery and my scales come down firmly on the side of surgery to improve my life. I'm sure you have more chance of being involved in a car accident than not waking up from this type of surgery.

I'm having my bypass next Friday and am very scared but not in any doubt. My surgeon too has a great reputation and i'm sure i'll be in safe hands. It is difficult not to think of the tradegies but as others have said my life is going to be shorter as a result of my weight so i have to go for it and believe that all will be well. Interesting about letters elffie i'm not sure what i want to do there xx
 
Allie - took me a while to do them, my daughter is 11 and shes heartbroken Im going into hospital, no matter how much I trivialise it for her, Im the only parent she has, and we are so close. I had to tell her how much I love her and how proud I am of her. I wouldnt be happy going into surgery without doing them as if something did happen ( heavan forbid it does) she will know how I felt and why I did it. same for the hubby, it also gets my feelings out of me before the op, so I know people know how I feel going into it.
they will be placed somewhere that they will both find them, but somewhere I can get to them when I get home, as I know in my heart Ill be fine, I just need that reassurance they know and for me it was letters. :D
 
Elffie I've been there and done the letter writing thing each time I've had surgery (5 major ops in the past)and it kind of acts as a mental good luck charm as if by writing the letters you're odds are much improved. It's worked so far and I'll be doing it again whenever I get my date through this time.

Do the maths? 7 out of 1500 is less than 1%... The risk of been killed crossing the road is probably more...

The only thing we can do is try and prepare for surgery as much as we can and do what the medical profession advises us..

As someone else says, weigh up the pro's and cons..... live fat/tired/in pain till your 80 (if you are lucky) or take a chance, put your faith in someone and maybe... Just maybe reclaim your life...

I will be writing my letters for near and dear. Also i'll be deciding who will take custody of my children if something goes wrong. But (and slap me down if you want too) i know i'm strong and i will make sure i can do whatever i can to prepare and make myself strong for my operation.

Hi Pinkdaisy, don't be worrying yourself because he's a great surgeon. He did my band ,mixmans sleeve,Blondemoments sleeve,Fedups bypass and Bexmoss's band and we're all here to tell the tale. Unfortunate for this lady I know, but it is a risk we all take to get the healthier life we want.Good luck with your op, you're going to be fine.xxx
 
It is a hard and scary decision and reading articles like that doesnt make it any easier.
However we have to put our faith in the surgeons and believe they are experienced in what they are doing.
I have had a fair few ops but have needed them so no choice really, when you are deciding yourself to go for an op it is much more difficult, and you think much more about it, at least thats what I have found, however at the end of the day it has got to be in our best interest, and in spite of all the scary stats. there are in fact very few deaths from Bariatric surgery and there are alot more done now.
Pinky chin up I am sure it will be a better decision to have it than to stay miserable and regret not having it.

Honestly, He is a great surgeon. I was 24st at the time of my Gastric Band op and everything went great. In fact, I was sent home the same day with nothing more than some paracetamol which I stopped taking the day after because I felt so good.

As long as you stick to the pre-op diet to the letter and make sure your in the best condition you can be for the day of your op then theres absolutely no reason for anything to go wrong.
Like 'Phatmomma' said, 7 out of 1500 is 1%. More die going to the shop!

Hi, as i said befor i am 54, been fat for 30 years, and i am still going for surgery. I don't have to write letters because my daughter (27) (who i love with all my heart) is going for it aswell. Her 3/4/5/ appointments in oct.


Thats how much faith i have in our surgeons.
 
yeah im being silly its just a big decision, im only 22 but i have had 8yrs of failed diets and i am over 21 stone i dont wana waste another 8yrs this size x
 
I too am worried about the risks, but i considered that my quality of life at my present size is poor and my life expectancy if i don't lose weight is very limited. Weighing this up against the risks feels like a no brainer to me, although my family seem much more anxious than me !
I have decided that immediately following my surgery i will keep in close contact with post oppers to make sure i am not experiencing anything untoward and will make sure i maintain good contact with my GP & SWMT ( i have a sneaking suspicion i will be camping out at A&E for every little twinge or dizzy spell !!)
 
haha i will be the same jayne, any pain and il be running to hospital lol and wont be shy to say if sumthing is wrong, im normally very quiet but if sumthing feels wrong they will know about it lol they will b sick of me xx
