i have but im having revision surgery not initial op whats your bmi do you fit the criteria?

Does any one know if anyone has been funded yet. My doctor applied for my funding over 2 weeks ago and i have not heard anything yet x

not sure about the funding part i dont know anyone YET he has, but its only early days, it tuck me nearly 5 years from first asking to funding to getting the op, so good luck

I asked my GP about a referral today and she said that essentially the bariatric service doesn't exist in my area (Kent) at the moment. It's 'on the agenda' with the commissioning group, so hopefully there will be more info 'in a few months’ :(

you can ask to be reffered to another area tho there was a lady from kent at the mdt day last week you need to get clued up on all the rules as im sure you can get help but might need to travel for it xx

Oh really? That's good news! My GP said that there is just no funding for any in Kent (in my area at least) until the commissioning group have met etc., so not for a few months...

Where in Kent?
My brother inlaw is Kent and got the ok last week. X

I got the distinct impression that my GP thinks it's going to be very difficult round here to get a referral now :/

I'm in maidstone and my doc wouldn't even refer me to a dietitian! Apparently being big wasn't enough....I was told if I was diabetic they would consider helping me! But my doctor said its almost impossible to refer patients atm.....hence the fact I begged, borrowed and worked my bottom off to afford private banding. It's so not right though, if you need help it should be given...I thought that's what nhs was there for!

The CCGs are not responsible for commissioning bariatric services (in England). It is now centralised to NHS England.

So your doc is right, there is no funding in Kent (or anywhere else for that matter). But that does not mean there is no funding!

The information leaflet is available here:
http://www.england.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/a05-p-a.pdf

Thank you so much for that info & link. So how do I get my GP to refer me in the correct way to access this centralised funding? I have to go back and see her in 3 weeks, so I'll try again then!! :)

"What the NHS Commissioning Board commissions
The NHS Commissioning Board (NHS CB) [NHS England]commissions specialist morbid obesity
services from Specialist Morbid Obesity Centres. This includes all bariatric surgery
and associated care delivered by the Specialist Centre, including medical care and
specialist weight management care for patients unsuitable for or not requiring
surgery.

Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) commission local weight management
services."

The above statements come from the NHS England operating manual.

To be fair, things are very much in flux at the moment with all the changes, and I know that Obesity services are one of the first things that have/will be reviewed. There are new policies coming in, in October. Your GP should have been provided with the resources on how to make applications to NHS England.

Have a look at the documents here: A05. Severe and Complex Obesity | NHS England

hi, sorry your gp wouldn't help you, can you go to another dr and sk there opion? im not diabetic but on the halfway point has i have had the diabetic test and after first blood test my blood sugar was 14 my last test was 3.4.

i would look to either going to another dr or cheking your hospital to see if they have a weight wise and try that way.
all the best bigbeefybuilder

My gp got a letter back from the commissioning board thanking her for referring me and stating hopefuly i have been referred to the service no futher action taken.
Its sounds promising to me but we dont know what it means my gp is just waiting for the commission board to ring her back to explain what it actually means. Has anyone else had this
