oh god...

So my bypass is getting closer and closer, and I’m worried.

I don't know what I’m doing!!!
I feel sick thinking about it.

I know it sounds soo daft, but I’m so so so scared of having a cannula... which is so daft considering the amount of tattoos and piercings I’ve had... but I’m scared stiff... the idea of walking down to theater makes me want to cry - and I have to stop thinking about it cos I start to well up.

I’m so scared of needles, and the last time I was in hospital was for a lumbar puncture, so that didn’t help!

I’m really starting to doubt I can go through with it... I want so much to loose weight, and I know I’m being an idiot, but I’m just so scared. The idea of being out to sleep frightens the life out of me!

I guess I didn’t realize I had this fear, having never had an op :(

Sorry for the rant, but I just needed to let it out!

Hiya

I think its natural to feel as you do. With regards to needles, I have a massive phobia because I have deep veins that are normally hard for the medics to find, and subsequently get stabbed and stuck and end up looking like a pin hole. BUT - I had to have a minor op a year or so before my WLS and I mentioned to the surgeon that I was petrified of the cannula, needles in general etc, and he asked for the medical staff to put numbing gel on the backs of both hands before I went down to surgery. It worked a treat, I never felt the needle go in, I wasnt stressed because they couldnt find my vein, it was just 100% times better. Ask the lady/or gent who will be putting you to sleep (they normally come round to chat to you before surgery) if you can have numbing gel put on your hands before you go down, it will make it much easier on you. Good luck :p

yeah when i had my pre op the nurse said they would use gel, im not good at having blood taken, im hard to find a vein on and have passed out one or twice (more than likely cos i was very ill at the time.. but never the less, pass out, needle in arm and having a fit on the floor) i guess thats why im scared.

thanks for the advice mnl :) - its probably fear of the unknown

I was the same, i dont like the canular needle as i had a nasty experience with one years ago (thats a story for another day though) so was crapping it a bit, but in the end the anesthatist i had was go good he showed it in so quick hitting the vein first time spot on i hardly felt it, what actually hurt more was when they pushed the anasthetic in, it stung a bit more than the needle.
Sorry that probably not really helping much - just trying to say its never as bad as you think its going to be !

Hi Becca, I think it's very usual to have such fears before a life changing event - even when it's something that you really want.

You fear having a canula -a realistic worry of course. They are not nice but you can ask for some numbing spray. I too have had loads of tattoos and I have a pierced tongue - the latter hurting a lot more (afterwards mainly). The nurses really know what they are doing and will be able to do it quickly.

It is nothing like the Lumbar puncture you had. I had one when I was 7 and I still have a very vivid memory of it 33 years later. LPs are total prolonged agony.
A canula is one nasty and it's over. You will be ok.

Any op. is the unknown for us - you may need to ask the anaesthetist when you see him/her for a pre-med - explaining you are worried. Hopefully this will send you off into a nice Temazepam cloud.

Really feel for you - maybe all the anxieties are worse because maybe you have no-one to really talk to about it or anyway to distract yourself being at yr Ma and Pa's place.

Glad you are able to express your worries here. I know I can't get rid of your worries but if you would like my e-mail please PM me or give me yr phone no. I totally understand if you don't want to but the offer is there.

The very best of luck.X

Oh, also, you asked what the Holland and Barret protein shake was like. It boasted of being vanilla flavour which turns out to be a lie. It was terrible mixed with yoghurt but entirely acceptable mixed with fruit juice.

lol thanks for the shake warning!!!

thanks so much for all the help (evern you SS...lol with your scary stories)

i dont know about the temazepam... me and that dont get along too well!

it really helps to be able to talk to people on here:)

Vision this as being the best tatoo or piercing you have ever had. Its not going to fade, ever need to be covered and is going to be on show to everyone. Fear is healthy but the people dealing with you are so proffessional they will put you at ease.
take care

Hi there,

Pre-op anxieties are normal. You are bound to feel apprehensive of an operation if you never had one... I was the same, 38 and had never been in hospital, ever.

I also had a weird fear of the cannular and have tattoos and have had piercings. All I can tell you is it is worse in thought than it is in deed. The nurse was talking to me and before I knew it, it was in, I did not feel it. If they are good at their job they will be very gentle and know that you feel anxious.

They are trained for every outcome...;)

Remember we are here up until the time you have to leave, we will bolster and support you through this emotinal time.

You will be strong and you will get through this and do you know why? Because you want this more than anything, you want the chance to be healthy and slimmer.

And you will be all those things. Big hugs to you....:)

Hi There

Hopelesscase and Cazbandy have said it all really.

You will be fine...you really will!

Have you ever considered a little hypnosis?...It's great...it's not too late to get it with a local therapist or you could get a self hypno tape.

In case I don't back on line before you go for your op just want to wish you all the best...and let us know as soon as you can how it all went.

You will be fine! (Promise)

xXx

thanks so much.

its good to hear that its not as bad in real life as it is in my mind :)

you guys are a real comfort :)

Becca there's not alot I can say after the wonderful words of advice you've already been given. Ask for the emla (numbing cream) and you won't feel a thing and ask for a pre med and you'll not feel the anxiety when going to theatre. If walking to theatre is a big issue for you then ask to go on your bed. If you do have a pre med, then you'll probably float to theatre lol. We're here to help you through your anxieties so don't worry just think of the new you thats about to start in your new slimmer and healthier life. HUGE HUGS Becca xxGaynorxx

thanks gaynor, your a star.

so is something to calm my nerves before hand an option? and can you go down in your bed instead of walk?!

.x.

please dont be scared of the canular, my viens are naff and they hide when they see the nurse coming

just look away when they put it in and think of something funny, thats what i do its just a little prick after all ;)
then before you know its, then its over with, you will be fine hun honest x

thanks liz, ill give that a bash!

.x.

I know it's easier said than done but you really gotta try and focus on other thing's hun, just go with the flow and don't worry about stuff that hasn't even happened yet.
I was petrified when I lay down on the surgery table, so much so that one of the surgeons could see it in me and he just leaned over a reasured me that everything was fine and it did help.
To be honest it all seems to go by really quick once your there and trust me there really good with those needles. STOP worrying it will all be fine, try and put it out of your mind. Make a list of thing's you want to achieve during and after weight loss, focus on your goals.

thats a reall good idea wannaloose :) thanks.
i keep looking at dresses lol been years since ive been in a dress, it makes me smile to think im going to be able to wear one... ill focus on that :)
