Protein Supplements/shots

I've not really thought about this, but have people benefited from having protein drinks/supplements? Aren't they the sort of things that bodybuilders use?

Hiya. In america, surgeons say it is a must post-op to supplement protein. I was surprised that it was not so here. You are right, this stuff was originally invented for body builders but the products I listed are specifically sugar-free and good for post-op wls. I think they will catch on soon that they have a new market and start catering to us but it hasn't started here yet...;)

Im lucky if I get any protien as well, its getting more difficult to eat for some strange reason  will pop into holland and barret and pick some up to give them a whirl, thanks shell

get a bank loan first Caroline, they're £2.99 each there ;)

Yes, as with all other foods, keep the fat and sugar low. I aim for ones that are protein shakes as oppose to body building shakes as you don't need all the other things they add like creatine.

I tried one of the Met-Rx shakes from holland and barratts, the choc mint one, and it was lovely, so that's what I've had delivered today.

It's worth getting just one from H&B first before you get a pack of 12!

For me, I struggle to get enough protein in, as I'm not a natural protein eater, so as an every other day kind of thing instead of breakfast I think it helps.

Shel is right. I have only selected the products that are good for us post-ops but there are many products that would not be good for us as they have stimulants, added sugar & vits we don't need or might have trouble digesting.

That's better :)

I have done some research......well I clicked on a link on another thread and this link came up ;) but this company evidently specialises in vitamin and protien for wls folks like ourselves, yes its seems a little pricey but they do a complete vitamin suppliment and protien suppliment that are in liquid form. Might try their starter pouch and see how they are
Products: The Bariceutical Prescription, liquid vitamins exclusively designed for biaratric patients and bypass patients, the only one in the world.

p.s shel can I lend your credit card, they are blooming pricey lol

Interesting site but it is based in US, New York and the shipping cost will bring the price way up.:(

Maybe we should form an import company and go into business selling this stuff to wls patients accross the country.

Can someone please explain to me, in very simple terms, why we need so much protein?

Hi Wobbles,

Here's the scoop:

1) Directly post-op: Increased protein is needed for repairing the body from trauma (surgery, rapid weight loss) becuase you have to feed the cells to replace them.

2) After healing has taken place: Increased protein is needed to feed the muscles while burning the fat, if you don't do that you starve the muscle and you loose muscle mass along with your fat (your body will burn anything for fuel, it doesn't care if it is muscle or fat) and you will become very weak.

Does that make sense?

Also, forgot to mention the bonus. When you eat protein, your body works harder to digest it than other foods, therefore it speeds up your metabolism making you a fat burning machine!!;)

Sorry, but we do not ship to international addresses :(

Thank you PG, that makes perfect sense, and i'm going to get some protein shakes today!!! Anything to speed up the process, and make me feel a little stronger.

Milk is protein isn't it? I drink about 2 pints a day.

I'm feeling quite confused now. I'm only 9 days post op and all this talk about protein supplements have left me wondering what I should be doing. Not once, before, during or after my surgery has any one mentioned that I need to be taking protein supplements. Are they totally neccessary and are n't there foods that you could be eating to provide you with the protein that you need. I must admit that the thought of eating pureed chicken and meat while I'm on this stage really does n't sound that appealing so could any one share with me protein rich things, other than meat or chicken that I could be having now to make sure I'm getting as much protein as I need. Prior to my op I never thought about food in its elements so all this talk of proteins and carbohydrates etc is totally foreign to me. Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheese, milk, eggs and some beans provide protein. Protein supplements aren't required it is just that actually eating enough is difficult in the early stages.

Sorry, I cut that post short by accident. Also yoghurt, fromage frais, tinned tuna & salmon, low-sugar custards & low-sugar mousse powder.

The problem is that at the portion size you can handle early on (the 1st 8 weeks) only allows for about half the protein that is recommended to support muscle mass & good health. To put simply, most servings of regular protein can't offer more than 10g of protein (usually more like 5g) at a time. If you are doing the recommended 4-6 meals for the 1st 8 weeks, you get 40-60g of protein (absolute max possible, usually more like 30-40g). For an ideal weight of 140lbs (I am not shooting that low personally) 80-100g of protein is recommended. So you can see the problem, that is why a drink of 4-6 ounces with a protein count of 20g or more can really make the difference.;)

This is all from research I have done, books I have read, etc. Do your own research if you like, I am just offering what I have found.

Best of luck and keep checking here for more protein ideas!:D

I've just eaten one egg whipped up with 3 spoonfuls of baked beans and I'm not experiencing any problems with it so far. Thanks for the advice, I'm going to be more conscious now to make sure I'm getting the protein I need. Can we buy this kind of thing here in the UK?

Savoury protein supplements

Hi PG,
Thanks for the advice, I'm basically living on soup (Covent Garden ones) and slimfast smoothies (much nicer than the shakes), supplemented by milky drinks, yoghurts and lots of fluids. I'm now getting a bit fed up with liquids.......this is so much harder than I thought it was going to be!!
I have done lots of research and some says to move onto "mashed/pureed" foods after 2 weeks, others earlier so I'm basically just getting thicker and thicker soups (still blending any lumps out). And it seems to be going OK.
I'm going to try some mashed potato and baked beans at the weekend. I haven't had my first fill yet so I have very little restriction, but I'm not that hungry, just craving variety!!
All your ideas (everyone) in this thread are great......keep them coming.......as they say.....variety is the spice of life!!:smiley1842:

Yep, go to the beginning of this thread, all my links are UK based and most have free shipping. Also, a couple of the products can be found at Holland & Barrett.

Let us know how you get on if you buy anything. People always need suggestions if you find something you like.

Yeah, I too have heard banders switch to puree early on. Just take it slow and make sure if it has bits to chew the life out of it. And yes, variety is the spice of life!!;)

You're a fountain of knowledge PG....such an asset to us all. Thank you for helping us out, and i'll remember you're the one to see when i need to know about my protein :) I know for sure i'm not getting enough!!
