Waiting got Gastric Bypass

Well have the go ahead from my local health authority and have seen the consultant. Currently I am just waiting for my op date.

Due to have the op hopefully in next 10 weeks at the Regency in Macclesfield.

Was hoping to have the bands but being diabetic the consultant and my local GP have persuaded me that the bypass is my best option. The op is to help with my diabetes before it gets to bad, more than a straight forward weight loss.

So what can I expect? Not too worried about the op I suppose but the life change afterwards, what to expect!

Hi,
Welcome I'm sorry I can't help with the bypass surgery advice as I'm having a FTT in sept but there are plenty of lovely people who will be along shortly who have already had the surgery and congratulations on your funding,
Take care

Hi DanDare
Congratulations on getting the go ahead for the gastric bypass. I am now 12 weeks post op and have had no problems at all. I have lost 4 stones in that time and have absolutely no regrets. I had mine done by Basil Amorri at the Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle and he was fantastic.
Keep us informed on your progress

Hi

I have my bypass at the The Regency in Macclesfield on the 17th July so any questions you have just shout. Which consultant are you under?

The dieticians go through the diets before and after surgery and you will be fine, I've stuck to these and not had any problems so far.

Let me know if I can help you in any way

Nic x

The consultant I saw at Regency us Doctor B Decadt, slightly hard to under stand because of his accent but he did fill me with confidence.

So the diet afterwards is OK. Was wondering what people thought about suddenly only being able to eat very small meals. Also what about drinking? I'm not a big drinker, most weeks nothing but occasionally a pint is nice. Does the small stomach pouch radically change drinking?

Hi

Yes the diet after is fine and you honestly aren't hungry anyway and personally I have found I have to make myself eat rather than actually wanting to.

As for the drinking, the diet sheets say you can drink but personally I haven't tried as yet but perhaps you would have to change your drink to shorts rather than a pint as it fills your pouch up and may be too gassy.

Hi,

Congratulations!

I had my RNY Gastric Bypass 10 days ago now, and I have been fine. The diet afterwards tends to go in stages. For me, the first 2 weeks, pureed/liquid food. Next 2 weeks, soft diet, and from week 5, a normal diet. All concentrating on getting protein in first. Of course this is what my surgeon and dietician has set for me, and EVERY surgeon etc has their own diet/rules to follow. The meals are very small, as your new stomach is about the size of an egg! Plus I live by 30 minute windows at the moment to ensure I am getting enough fluid and food in! I have to stop drinking 30 mins before a meal and wait 30 mins after a meal to start drinking again. No eating and drinking together. It can take a long time too to actually eat your small portion, and to drink a whole glass of water! I have been told to avoid carbonated drinks as they can cause excess wind/bloating and can even stretch the pouch. Also alcohol is to be avoided especially as the sugar can cause dumping, and it has not really any nutritional value..just calories! Plus I have been told that alcohol can make you fell very merry after a small amount:D after the bypass. Maybe there is someone who is a lot further out can shed more light on this?

Everyone is different, and everyones pouch is different, so it is really up to you to listen to your pouch/body after the operation and to follow all the guidelines given to you by your surgeon and dietician.

Good luck.

kel thanks for that. its really helped me to get around what is to be expected. what pre op diet did you do?

Hi Dan,

I'm not far from you (Wirral) and had a bypass at Regency the same day as Nic (16th July).

I've found the post op diet fine, easy to manage etc. I don't want food most of the time, so only eating a small amount isn't a problem!

Glad there are few local people who have had there bypass at the regency. Have a lot more confidence in the hospital after your replies. I have been reading blogs lately and it does seem that everyone see the results only in a positive attitude, cool!

Still awaiting op day but think will try something like slimfast to start preparing myself. Good or bad idea?

Hiya

They really are good at the Regency and very supportive and you get excellent care whilst in.

I went to see another friend there yesterday who had her op on Saturday she looked fantastic and is doing really well.

As for slimfast, personally I didn't do any diet as such until I got the pre-op diet then stuck to that. I'm sure others will be along with there thoughts soon xx

Hi I had the bypass done at the end of May and i too had diabetes. Have lost over 4 stone and no longer need my diabetic medication feel so much healthier and can honestly say i've not regretted it at all. The first few weeks are hard and the introduction of more solid foods can make you sick but it does get easier and i can now eat small portions of most things without any problems. Good luck and keep me posted of your progress x

Hi, i went to the Regency on 23rd July and saw Dr Decadt. He sait my op would be September/October and I'm still waiting. Have phoned several times and told I am near the top of the list, but November's op dates gone out and my name not in that pile. Was wondering do you have ur date through yet?

Hi Simo,

Welcome to Mini's! I had my bypass at Regency Macclesfield on 16th July under Mr Brough. Its a horrid time that wait between consult and getting your date! You'll get there though, it won't be long. It took a long time to get to needing the op and sometimes it can take a while to get to having the op too.
