Hi all

Well im day 3 post op now and feeling ok.

I went in for my op at 7am on monday morning the 22/6/2009, i was admitted to the surgical admissions lounge , the staff on there were lovely, i met a wonderful woman who was also having a bypass and we chatted for quite a while.

I was 2nd out of 3 on the list but this was later changed as the woman after me required a HDU bed and i didnt so in the end I went third, but in all honesty the time flew by and i was able to get myself together and just enjoyed listning to my i pod.

Before I went to theatre i had all my usual observations checked I was given an antacid medication and a blood thinning injection, i was seen by the anaethatist and by Mr Ammorri who were all lovely, it was at this point I nervously signed my consent form and was also informed again about all the risks of surgery etc.
The anaethatist also told me that when i wake up i may have a blue face and hair ???????? lol this is because they isert die into your new pouch to check for any leaks but apparently it sprays everywhere !!!!

I was finally taken to theatre at about 12.50 I walked down with a very very good looking theatre nurse and of course I was looking extra stunning with no makeup on and a lovely green gown and white TED stockings lol
I was taken in to the theatre were i was greeted by another hunky theatre nurse and then the anaethatist came in who was also good looking I was in hospital heaven !!!

They took my observations put stickys on my chest and were commenting on my very brown belly lol i was so embarressed. the anaethatist put a cannula in my hand and commenced an infusion which i believe had Fentanyl in which is a pain relieving drug that also relaxes you, he told me to tell him when i felt all nice !!!!
I didnt dare say i been feeling all nice since being in here with 3 hunky men . hehe sorry i will continue ...

I told him when i felt all relaxed and he began to give me the anaesthetic, he used a full syringe and i was very aware they were all looking at me and i wasnt asleep i just kept smiling, then ........................................................
............................................................

I woke up in recovery at 6pm I had been in theatre a very long time for some reason the operation had taken well over 4 hours !!!!
I was in agony ii was crying and writhing around all over the bed I was also wretching couldnt styop feeling sick it was awful, the anaesthetic nurse was amazing and she got hold of the anaethatist who gave me one off doses of morphine to help the pain and I ended up with a cocktail of antisickness medication as they were having trouble getting this under control.
The nurse was fantastic i wish i new her name because she deserves a great big boquet of flowers, she kept getting the anaethatist back until my pain and sickness had settled.

I was told my husband was nervously waiting for me upstairs and i was so pleased he was there for me as he had to go straight away in the morning when he dropped me off.

I had iv fluids up and PCA (patient controlled analgesia) which is a button you press that administers morphine i also had inflatable things on my legs which went off about every 10 mins or so these help prevent DVT.

Eventually i was taken to the ward B2 and i remember as i was being wheeled their on my bed opening my eyes to see my amzing handsome and supportive husband walking next to the bed with me, i was so pleased to see him, he squezzed my hand and told me he loved me .....

I will continue with rest later and bring u up to speed with whats happening now on day 3 xxxx

diary continued

Hello

Right

I will continue.......

Back on the ward AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
what an awful night I was so upset my husband had to leave I wanted him to climb in bed with me and snuggle up and keep me safe, but he had to go and then I was left with the nurse from hell......

Im a nurse and i am shocked at home some nurses practice, not saying I am perfect but oh my goodness the lack of understanding and care was horrid.
I do have to say in the hospitals defence I was allocated to a ward that is not usually where the bariactric surgerys would go and on the bottom of the bed was a gastric bypass laminated sheet which instructed the nurses what to do each day after the bypass hhhmmmmm out goes individualised care ........

Anyways.. my main problem was pain , the sickness had eased but the pain was driving me mad the PCA didnt work properly and I told the nurse this about 10 times (im not exagerating) and she said it is I have checked it , yes I was getting doses of Morphine but the work needed by more poor thumb to get some was a nightmare. (I complained about this in tears in the morning and was apoligised too by the ward manager and he confirmed that the PCA was broken and it was going to be sent away to be fixed)

I was now a little happier as horrible nurse had gone and new nurse was on the ball , she discontinued my iv fluids and after checking said laminated sheet instructed me i could have 60mls of water an hour till dinnertime and then I could have some clear soup.

This very nice nurse also brought me some pain relief and I was then able to get up freely and wander to go and get myself showered, what an amazing feeling that was (I even put make up on ) after all hunky drs may come to see me ;).

Throughout the day I was seen by a a variety of people

Physiotherapist - who did a walking and stair assessment on me which i had no problems with and they told me about bending and lifting and that i should be doing no lifting and heavy duties for 6 weeks and not to pick up my 3 year old . YAY 6 weeks off work !!!!

Specialist Nurse - What a lovely lady she came and discussed what I should be eating over the next 6 weeks and in particular the next 2 weeks , i.e liqueds only and gave me an information leaflet on this too (which to be fair i had already had pre op ) she discussed quantities and gave me her number and also informed me how to contact her

Dieticion - hahahaha had just woke up high on morphine cant remember a word she said ....sorry !!!!

Pharmacy - Went through all my medications with me and when to take them etc

Doctors _Havnt got a clue who they were but a female one was lovely (Mr Ammori didnt come to see me ) she said she was in theatre with me and that I had a great tan and that she felt I wasnt big enough for a bypas lmao I said my BMI is 45 I weigh 20 stone ish !!!! she said i know i checked your record , I then had a moment of panic and said you did do the bypass didnt you and you didnt give me a bigger stomach than others cos u felt i didnt need it and she laughed and said of course we did it and your stomach is now tiny .......PHEW

She said stomach was about size of my antibacterial small sized gel I had brought in for my hands.

She said If I felt well enough later that day I could go home YIPEEEEE

Later that day in comes horrid nurse number 2 , I was concerned as my stomach had really expanded and I was in pain and also my pulse was a little high for me (I know im a patient from hell, nurses always make the worst patients) I also hadnt passed any wind and was concerned I was getting a condition called Paralytic Ileus basically this is where the bowel stops working,

She did her job and got the DR to see me and he reassured me I had bowel sounds , but then she said they didnt operate on your bowel ERM PARDON i was speechless I thought it wise not to mention that the bowel was cut and reattached to the new pouch and then bypassed.

Anyway was still in pain but made me decision that I would go home as all pain medication could be given at home and I would also be able to snuggle with my hubbie and most of all sleep in my own bed.

I finally arrived home at about 8pm gretted by my children running to the car and my youngest daughter saying "are you slim yet mummy " bless , it was wonderful and I had done it I had the op and was home safe and well just 12 hours after coming back from theatre.

All that mattered now was recovering and enjoying the rest of my very new life with the people I love ..........

to be continued ............
