Liver shrinkage

Hi all, has anyone ever woken up and op hasnt been done? Am scared that any slight deviation from pre-op will mean i will wake up undone ?

I think some people have but not many. Your liver would have to be in a right state for it to be that bad. That's not to say that you can slack off on the pre-op diet but if you have a minor slip up or two, it's not likely to be a catastrophe. If you do slip up, then cheat with protein rather than carbs since what you want to do is empty the carb reserves in your liver.
If you really feel like the pre-op diet is torture and you're going to give in, have some strongly flavoured hard cheese or some lean meat. It's hard to eat large quantities of these and they will give your mind time to beat the cravings. It's worth sticking to the diet, you want your liver to be soft and small to remove one mor risk from your surgery.

Hi Gaynor, you will be fine, this week is only our pre pre op as long as we stick to it for the next two weeks we will both be fine. I'll see you on the Sunday When your all done and I as nervous as hell, it will be you saying to me it's ok your be fine. Lol xx

Absolutely, five days of green veg and chicken with sf jelly is proving more challenging than I thought but you're right, anything that assists the op is worth it.

If you find that diet too hard, consider contact your provider and seeing if maybe you can do the milk and yoghurt diet. You basically have only semi-skimmed milk and diet yoghurt. It sounds aweful and it is no walk in the park but a lot of people find it easier because it removes choice and it's more "automatic".

It's the one I was told to do and found it easier than I expected basically because I did not have to think therefore couldn't make bad choices :)

i have had to do pre op for 4 weeks and let me tell you the first 2 where tough and i collapsed and cheated, but i have knuckled down this last 2 with the milk diet and it is so easy now after 8 days is almost normal, i dont think of food and i am happier, not too mention 10lbs lost since friday, i am not worried about my liver as i believe that ketosis is a sign that your liver is depleted of glycogen which is the idea of the pre op and i had ketosis for the last 4 days, all i can say is knuckle down and forget the rest of the world until your op is over, i have a very busy house 5 kids and my girl, and its almost as if i am in slow motion and they are shooting around in the background, it really does feel like you are alone for the last days before surgery, no matter how much support you have, well thats how i feel anyway, so please dont worry just stick the rules and it will be over vefore you know it,

Yes people have had this happen - some had stuck to their pre op diet 100% as well.

Its really not worth 'cheating' after all you are only cheating yourself potentialy out of surgery. Its hard work but worth it.

Good luck x

Sorry Thump but your comments re minor slip ups etc are ill advised.

Thanks Stubad, have got two weeks to do but started a week early. Am glad I did coz have realised I need to be organised and prepared. Would've preferred the milk diet as have done the Cambridge and lighter life many times!!!

Mh, it's tricky because some people (like me) have a higher tendency to lose it if it is this massive thing and if for whatever reason there is a slip-up, even accidental, then it's all "OMG I ruined it I'll go crazy and binge now!" while its easier not to go crazy if I can say "well, I had that thing but it's not the end of the world, I haven't ruined all my work I'll just do better now". The reality is that a small slip-up is infinitely preferable to a big one, both physically and psychologically. It's been my experience that if people have a small slip but blow it all out of proportion, then they are more likely to just give up.

Saying that a slip-up is not the end of the world isn't saying go ahead and cheat. It's saying, forgive yourself and keep at it.

Thanks Thump, that sounds like a good theory to me and if the unthinkable happens and we do buckle at least we will be conscious of damage limitation x

Yes, it happened to me and i stuck to the pre op, i was just unlucky :) xx

it was horrible and unbelievable, i've had a band fitted now, good luck with yours :) xx
