My diary - From the beginning

Congrats on getting onto the losers bench franky. Onwards and downwards to the new you :)

Give it a couple of days and you'll be back to normal x

You'll feel a lot better once you're home and in your own bed, glad you managed to get some sleep though.

Hopefully you'll notice a big improvement every day, it doesn't take long.

Hi frankly, so glad op went well and your in recovery time now. I'm also a tummy sleeper and for the first two nights slept on the reclining chair in living room lol, by day 5 everything gets better x

Tummy sleeper too I didn't realise there were so many of us. I was lucky I had single incision so only had to avoid belly button, made my life a lot easier. I found that a an extra pillow to prop up my side really helped. But your find out what suit you, your body will just sleep if it needs it. Enjoy the rest. X

Hey everyone. Lots of pain still. I had a lie down at 6pm last night and I got up for pain killers at 1am and went back to bed. Just getting up now at 6.30 am, so I've caught up on some sleep.
The cat seems to be looking after me!!!
Like I say, lots of pain, and lots and lots and lots of rumbling.
I only had a glass of milk and a glass of squash yesterday, so I know I have to step up the sipping of water today and try and get some soup down me. I'm unsure how long a glass of water should last me. I don't seem to have a problem getting it down, it's not getting stuck. But I have this fear of stretching the stomach.
I know it's a learning curve.
I think I'm constipated too. I keep sitting on the toilet, but nothing's happening. Not surprising really with what i haven't consumed lately.
I hope you're all well, and thanks for the continuing support. It means a lot. X

Keep taking the painkillers regularly Franky, even if you don't think you need them - by keeping some pain meds in your system it should help avoid the worst of the pain.
You know you need more liquids - if you're worried about gulping rather than sipping then take them hot so you HAVE to sip. Should help with the constipation too.

In terms of constipation does it feel like your system is sluggish or does it feel like you need to go but it's stuck? I had the latter, and the only thing that helped with my impaction issues was movicol - I'm still taking a sachet a day as when I stop taking it things get painful pretty quickly!

For 2 days out you're doing great:)

Haha my cat looked after me too!

Try and up those fluids if you can, it also helps with constipation - I've not suffered at all.

My guidelines are 2-3 litres of liquid a day, which is a LOT.

Liquid goes straight through the band and won't damage it.

As an example, yesterday I had:

B - glass of of Build Up with skimmed milk and huge cup of tea

L - runny yoghurt, glass of Complan

Snack - glass of fruit juice with Innocent fruit tube

D - can of tomato soup (a whole can proved a bit too much actually, half was better) followed by glass of sugar-free squash

Snack - Actimel 0%

The Complan/Build Up is giving me vital vitamins, and I'm also taking a daily chewable vitamin tablet.

Take it easy and I hope the pain gets less for you soon x

Franky - welcome to the losers bench and glad all has gone well with your surgery.

With the pain - take regular painkillers, especially for the first couple of days. There's no point suffering. Take them regularly to keep the pain at bay and it will help you. If you've got wind pain, try to move around gently, move your arms in a windmill motion as this can also help dislodge the wind. Windeze (I found boots own brand worked the best) and also peppermint tea or cordial.

As far as liquids go, sipping is ok and the best way is to keep a bottle of water or whatever with you so that you can keep getting the liquids in. Don't worry if you don't feel hungry and cannot stomach shakes or soups - post op, I struggled to tolerate dairy, milk even wouldn't go down well and HW advised me to step back, go to clear liquids but make sure I stayed hydrated as that was more important than getting "food" in, in terms of soups, shakes etc.

At this point, you shouldn't actually be struggling to get fluids down, so don't worry - even after fills you shouldn't have issues getting them down, but with restriction it may slow you down. There is conflicting information regarding drinking with meals too when you get to normal foods, and HW themselves give conflicting advice depending on who you see.

But, don't worry about sipping, just avoid big gulps! As that will cause a wind type pain, but fluids aren't on their own, going to really cause band issues.

Take it easy, drink regularly and if you don't feel hungry to want soup/shakes, don't have them. Also, if you're finding that you're constipated, move over to fruit juice, vegetable juice or fruit/veg smoothies, blend in fruit and berries as that can also help. Prune juice etc in natural form are all good while on this stage.

Some people also find that actimel type yoghurts also help with constipation, but if not, go to the chemist and pick up something like dulcoease (green and silver box) these tablets are tiny tiny and won't get stuck or give you any issues with the band. But, because there is a very reduced intake of food etc, there's not really anything to come out . . .

The band is an ongoing learning curve, what you can eat or have one day, you may not be able to have the next - but take regular painkillers to help with the pain that you're having because there really is no need to suffer :)

I'm just about to have my first soup.

I had a call at 10am from Healthier Weight, to make sure I'm ok, ask how it went and answer any questions.
I was quite impressed.
She also booked in my first fill and check up for 5 weeks tomorrow.
I'm still in some pain, getting used to movement etc, but I'm on top of the painkillers now.
I'm going to go out tomorrow for a walk, get moving properly.
Lots of rumblings and gurgling.
I've had two glasses of milk, 3 glasses of squash and like I say, some thin oxtail soup is on it's way.
I'm bored already.
Thanks Christ for FIFA 14!

Your doing fab, I was crippled with wind pain and constipated sorry too much info I know.. Day 6 I had liquid senokot everything moved it was pure heaven I could have sent the makers flowers!! Mr super did mine everyone warned me he was rude I thought he was lovely. I sipped as many fluids as possible and strained a lot of fresh soups which were lovely.. I tried slim fast but could only stomach the banana flavour. Day 6 changed everything for me my sleeping, pain, wind all went.. The day before I had my in laws stay and my step kids (I hadn't told any of them) and it was like looking after 5 kids was hell I dragged myself around and after my poo.... Well I could dance around haha. I sat and cried!!

I'm 4 weeks in the glues all off and just started on food. You need to rest but little walks do move the wind too. Your doing fab and since my milk diet I've lost 1 stone 9lbs and it's all come off my face, chest and shoulders so really visible I'm so happy!! Just you wait and see another few days and you will feel fab

Thanks for the information.
So what were you consuming for the first couple of weeks?
Yesterday I had two glasses of milk, some squash and some strained oxtail soup.
Calorie wise, less than 400.
I'm going to go out for a walk today I think.

I had a real hard time at first Franky, I was surprised as I expected it to be a walk in the park, I stayed in bed for 5-6 days and took only 500 cals a days for about 2 weeks, for 3 days I had water only... Then suddenly about day 10 I felt fine, still had three weeks off work thou.
My band was primed with 4.5ml thou so don't know if the swelling and tightness was more then usual, but I'm 9-10 weeks out and couldn't feel better...
Good luck x

Franky - it will ease off and you will find as the swelling goes down, the hunger will start to return and you will consume more. I couldn't tolerate milk stuff post surgery and went onto clear fluids only (literally water and NAS squash for a good 3-4 days) they said to me from HW, its not the calories that are important at this time and if you don't feel hungry, don't have anything, but liquids and keeping hydrated is important.

Glad you're on top of the pain :)

Hopefully you'll continue to feel better every day.

I'm enjoying the milky drinks, I've found Complan a real godsend as it makes me feel full. But as long as you're staying hydrated, that's the main thing.

Sorry haven't been on here much. Great to read ur doing so well! I'm a sleever so don't want to give u any advice incase it's different for bands.
Sending u my thoughts and well wishes.
Don't be spending a fortune on fifa coins lol :)

I had slim fasts, squash, milky coffees, and some strained soup. The WW ones are very thin and sainsburys tom and basil and chicken broth is too. I still strained them tho.
I didnt feel like much and didnt have much energy either. I was having as little as 400 cal some days. The days I could manage a slim fast (only half sometimes less) i had more.

Its such early days for you, I tried to walk to move the wind but found it hard. It was getting from a lying position or sitting to upright was killing me but I could feel the wind trapped and was just getting more and more swollen.

Mr Super said to me you can be up and about in 3 days walking and exercising. After 3 days I felt shocking and thought it must be me being a wuss. I watched on you tube the actual op and they are so rough it made me understand more why I felt awful. It goes in time and I soon forgot the bad days.
