My PCT wont fund my WLS..........

loubyl00

I want to shrink!
until I have completed 6 months specialist weight management at Salford Royal . So I am now waiting for appointments with dietician and psychologist.

Has anyone else been through this? What will it entail? What chance is there of me getting the funding after the 6 months? etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

After browsing this site for a few months I was prepared for some hoops to jump through so it hasnt set me back. This site has helped to prepare me and for that I am very grateful. :D

Thanks guys,

x

Can't help I'm afraid my route has been incredibly easy compared to most  Just want to wish you all the best with yr journey. xxx

Hi Lou

I completed my 6 months with weight management in May 2009.

My appointments were at a local health centre, although I do believe that they hold some appointments at the Gateway Centres across Salford as well as the hospital.

After completing WM the dietician then referred me to the surgical team at Salford Royal. I had my One Stop Clinic appointment on 6th August 2009, my sleep studies completed 8th September 2009 & my psychologist appointment was on 29th October 2009.

I was advised by Gill (Mr Ammori's Sec) that I was then put on the surgical waiting list from the date of my last appointment (29th Oct) and that my operation would take place within 18 weeks of that date.

I had my Bypass on 1st Feb 2010.

The waiting list times may be longer now due to the amount of patients requesting WLS. Is Salford your PCT? If so, the current criteria for WLS is a BMI of 50 or over with co-morbidities such as sleep apneoa, diabetes, arthritis etc. If your BMI is less than 50 the chances of getting surgery are slight. My mums was 47.6, she had completed her 6 months with WM but they set the BMI of 50 around that time (prev. was 40) so she no longer qualified.

Are you attending the support group meeting at Salford this week?

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Take care

Sounds pretty standard to me...some PCTs will strictly follow NICE guidelines, others insist on 'additional' participation in weight management clinics, psychological evaluations etc before they will agree to fund WLS. I had to see a dietician, an exercise chap & be tested for sleep apnoea before my obesity consultant would apply for funding for me. It really depends on your area as to how many hoops you have to jump through. Stick with it though. Obviously no-one can guarantee you will get funding at the end of it, but if you can show you are committed to the whole process, your chances will probably be much better than those that aren't committed.

Thanks guys.

I am with Oldham PCT. My BMI is 60. I have type II diabetes. I dont know if Oldham follow NICE guidelines. Do you know what the NICE guidelines are?

Hi Louby

It's just about demonstrating that you are going to try and loose weight. I know some people on here had to loose a certain percentage of their body weight before going on to the next stage. Salford didn't require that at the time I was going through.

I think over the six months I lost, gained & lost again 5lbs in total. But my dietician had advised me at the time that if I lost too much I might do myself out of the surgery! So, in short, it's playing the WL game to get to your end goal.

I'm not upto date with current practices, but I've not heard that it's changed either.

See you at the next meeting x

Hi, I am trying to get hold of my OH who is the master of funding his user name is puffinrub either go by facebook or email him, he will do all he can to get you on the right track.

hi there i had to complete 12 months weight managment with my pct to get funding, just a hoop most have to jump through with the nhs; but they need to know your serious about loosing weight and righty so
regards steve

Lou,

Okay, being that you're in Oldham, it looks like you're covered by the North West Specialised Commissioning Team. Get on the phone with them tomorrow and ask for them to email over their Morbid Obesity Pathway and Referral Criteria document.

I can't find anything relevant up-to-date but as of the last published criteria document, they adopted a slight variation on the NICE guidelines. With a BMI of 60 kg/m2 you should have absolutely no problems with getting a surgical referral as a first line resolution but if you do, I suggest you ask them why they are disregarding the NICE guidelines.

I am assuming that you've already demonstrated an inability to lose weight under a weight management programme ran by your GP in the last year or so. If you have then it's pointless doing so again with such a high BMI as the professionals know it won't happen. On the other hand, you just woke up one morning and thought "I think I'll have surgery!" without trying to lose the weight under a GP controlled programme then they have ever right to refuse funding at this stage.

You now have my email address from Han, so feel free to drop me over a detailed email if you need anything else, but providing there's a verifiable effort (even via something like Slimming World, etc) then they should accept a funding request.

Regards, Ade.

Ta for that Ade,

I dont mind waiting my 'turn' but if there is anything I can do to speed things up I will defo do it. So I've already doen what you suggested and am waiting for the email now.

Thanks again.

hi, can i ask which pct you are under, your process seems so fast. i have been assessed and now funding is being applied for. i am under tameside pct and hope my journey is as fast as yours.

Hi I had funded within 6 weeks of my doc applying in jan 2010 that was applied for first before referred for surgery . I have my surgery in 2 weeks so 16 month road . However I didn't get sent to weightmanagment programmes . It is interesting to see how didn't parts of the country do this process so differently ! I am also nhs but having my op at private clinic due to st georges not being able to cope with the numbers of ops they have todo . As of nov 10 the government cuts meant docs in my area not referring any more patients for surgery . Good luck with your journey x :)
