Ok so had this appt for 2 weeks!!!! Researched loads, wrote a report with detailed diet history etc etc and went in armed!! What a let down! She was miserable stated to her how difficult it has been to come to see her today and to talk about weight problems! She then kept saying well surgery isn't easy (I know that!!!) and there can be lots of complications after! Reiterated that being morbidly obese has lots of complications too! Went over my weight loss history (am a member of lighterlife after losing 6stones 2 years ago) and stated that just because the surgery don't have evidence of my weights doesn't mean there isn't any!!!!! Gave her the report and copies of my lighterlife weigh ins and she said she will look at it! She's only part time so I'll ring her next Monday to see if she's going to refer me!!!! I really didn't have a positive meeting today at all. In fact I did say to her refer me and let the bariatric team (who are specialists) assess my suitability!!!!! GPs can be so up themselves ;/)

awww sorry about that hun hopeyou get a more positive out come xx

Hi Paula,
Keep pushing and chasing.
Do you know what the NICE guidlines are for your area/Primary Care Trust?
My GP was hesitant (limited experience with WLS), but when we compared my criteria to the NICE guidelines, I met the criteria for direct application for funding, which she agreed to do.... and my application was succesful.

Good Luck with your journey.

SNx

- All appropriate non-surgical measures have been tried but have failed to achieve or maintain adequate, clinically beneficial weight loss for at least 6 months.

This is the bit she felt we hadn't done but as I explained orlistat is not suitable for my line of work (side affect-wise) and she didn't push that. I will keep pestering her next week!!!!!!
Thanks for all your replies though. Tbh I don't think I could've seen a sterner GP in the whole practice!!!!! Lol

my journey started took a couple of years but i got caught up in alot of policy changes. my file was mislaid!! all sorts! and came very close to giving up but am now almost 10 months post op and it was worth it. so persevere and you will get there. They don't make it easy that's for sure! but we are all here for advice or just to have a rant to! x

Wow. I'm so suprised by lack of support my some people's GPs. Mine was amazing and took it out of his spare time to help me. It took ages with everyone else but it started with him.

I'm not sure whether it's because they are worried about funding (which isn't up to them anyway) or the fact that it seems a lot of female GPs don't seem to like big women? I'm not generalising but from experience men are a lot better.

If she continues to not support you, I'd suggest seeing another doctor, and explain you don't think the support was there with her- this will make them happy you rely on them.

You've done all you can and well done for found all your research and info on weight loss. You'll get there- DINT GIVE UP! It took me 4 years and I nearly did but I'm here 9 weeks post op so come on hun, YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Im sorry that it didn't go well. When I raised it with my GP who has treated me for almost 15 years, she just laughed while saying "thats a bit drastic" and changed the subject! Hence the reason I went private . . .

I'd book an appointment to see a different GP, and then another and another and another if they don't assist and can't give you a reasonable explaination. Sometimes they just need to see how important this is to you, sometimes you have just throw them a curve ball and they don't have experience and delay so they can talk to colleagues. Using up their valuable time often concentrates the mind!

funding

my doctor was so good and help me all the way
he really fright for me to get the band
i went through year at heartlands hospital, losing weight sleep clinic
even saw mr super would would do the op
he thenm put me forward to have the op,
they put in for funder BUT I WAS REFUSED, as not dietabtic
even with all my other problems
my doctor was gutted
i went private, when i went to dolan park and saw mr super he remember me

Ironically I agree with Vespa. My male Gp suggested it long before I was ready and daft as I was I said no! But glad I did as I had it at the right time for me.

When you say try another GP in the same practice can I ask if GPs go against colleagues?
Thanks

as far as i know we are all entitled to a second opinion x might be wrong but i'm sure someone else will know :) i do know i asked a doctor years ago and he said not needed you can diet etc etc then i asked another one same practice and he referred me but it was about 2 yrs difference so as i say not sure i think you can write to your practice manager if you're not happy with a doctor's decision as well.

I would certainly goto another doctor, mine was fantastic. I have also been down the lighter life journey, lost 6 to then put 7 on. I think its worse when you have lost weight and then felt thin, to then go back fat again! I have a certain doctor who I would avoid at all costs - try them all. You have nothing to loose!

Yes they can and will. Particularly if you don't mention that you've already asked to be referred :)

Thanks all of you for your responses wonderful. Will wait to speak to this one next Monday but might make another appt with male GP to hedge my bets and cancel if needed!!!!!! ?
