wow yours was quick and seams to be working for you

Well done!!!!

Hi Sandra, Great result, hope your appointment goes ok.

thankyou ian appointment today I'll keep you posted later
went to see the nurse today she was happy about the weight i have lost she then put me on a 900 calorie diet I'm not happy bout it because that's not really a plan she said I have do do tier3 so looking like a year this diet is really restricted do I have to do this for a year it's almost starvation it would be easy if after surgary but not before how as everybody coped

Great news that the hospital feels the same way as you about the weight loss achieved on the Milk Diet. Tier 3 is between 6 and 12 months, before been passed to Tier 4 (Surgery). I am about 3 weeks behind you so also expect to be put on 900 cals when i go back in March.

Hi Sandra
Well done on your weight loss, I lost around the same as you and have now been put onto the 900 calorie a day plus 1 pint semi skimmed milk, it's actually not to bad, you have to get in the right frame of mind and be prepared to stick with it even if you don't lose on some weeks as you would end up undoing all your hard work so far,I do find it a challenge not to just give up if I have a week where I only stay the same, I constantly fight with myself at these times, I have good days and bad days but I'm really trying and have now lost 2 stone. Also like you I have to be assessed for 1 year so I have 6 months left plus 'upto a year' after that for surgery ! it's not easy and yes it may be slightly easier after surgery but I'm not looking at surgery as an easy option and I feel we just have to accept that this is what we have to do to be able to get the surgery, are you with Luton and Dunstable? X

yes I'm with luton and dunstable do you have to stay on this 900 calories for the whole time I have to go back on the 23rd March to see the nurse I have anethatist 27th February so have to stay focused and try my best are you managing the portion sizes I'm allowed 2 pints of milk per day also

Hi Sandra, yes I do have to stay on it the whole time. I'm choosing low calorie food most of the time so I'm ok with my portions but I'm also trying to increase my protein, if your assessment is for a year your lucky to be seeing the nurse and anaesthetist so soon, I've only seen the dietician but am booked to see physician march 30th along with dietician, is your assessment for 1 year or 6 months? It's worked out by you BMI plus any co-morbidities ?

some people are just put on a milk diet pre op. For others it is apart of a 6 month weight loss program - Intensive weight management program. this involves 8 weeks "milk only" 8 weeks half food half milk for the same calories and the final 8 weeks are the same calories but with food. i put "milk only" as you do also have to have other liquids i.e water, a stock cube for the salt and a vitamin tablet. Also to make the milk more palatable you can use No added sugar crusha and also you are allowed 1 no added sugar jelly sachet a day which i have ocassionally made into milk jelly just to mix it up a bit. The amounts and what you can actually have I believe vary from person to person and other medication is adjusted accordingly. it is like a body reset and works well to shrink your liver and really help with sugar levels.

I can't say im finding it very easy although the milk is incredibly filling I am truly struggling with the mental want to eat something. I wasn't actually expecting that, I thought I would just be hungry...

The main use of the milk diet is as one of the choices as the liver reducing or liver shrinking diet (LSD or LRD) which is used just prior to surgery. This is dependent on your surgeon and they will identify which LRD they want you to do. This is either done for 2 weeks or a max of 4 weeks before surgery (however some people have to stay on it for longer if their surgery is cancelled and rearranged).

The aim is to remove the glycogen stores from the liver due to lower carbohydrate intake this shrinks the liver and changes its texture which means the surgeon can move it easier out of the way of the stomach and it is less likely to tear/ become damaged - it is therefore a safety thing.

However, as @LuisaM has said, some centres are using it as a weight management/ reducing diet and a way of testing commitment to the surgery pathway. I think L&D do this for 4 weeks.

It's amazing how much different hospitals have different regimes..
I only had 14 days of a LSD and it didn't involve milk.
It was a very low Carb diet plan with set meal options.
It did involve measuring and weighing xx
