September 2016 Surgeries

Are there quite a few meds afterwards then? Might pick up a crusher in advance. Don't fancy struggling with meds I need!

I'd check with your team first. I was started on tablets the day after surgery - paracetamol and omeprazole, and a week later got the letter for which vitamins I need, from dietitian. Just as well really, I vomit with dispersable para!

wow! I just have to remember to take the forceval - have to take it an hour after food. Blooming horse tabs they are!

I would talk to specialist before taking I have been told to not take mine for a few weeks by specialist and tum.y can't take it.

A year?! I couldn't cope with chewing mine so went back to swallowing them all home by day 4 :)
I know from other conversations here and with my team some places prescribe vitamins, iron, calcium etc post op and others like mine, say a complete multivitamins and they wait to see what else you need based on blood results although I automatically get the B12 shot every 3 months

I agree - I will be having a discussion about that at my 6 week review.

The ones I need to crush are ones I was already on and are not available in liquid form (well certainly not from the hospital, although I was told in advance they were), and obtaining from GP/chemist is proving a long challenging experience!

That surprises me given that we were prescribed from the same hospital pharmacy, and I got dispersible!

Were you on Ward 82 by the way?

I'm confused as to why tablets are being crushed or taken in liquid form. I thought that was only a requirement for bypassers, due to malabsorption?

It certainly was the case that tablets are ok to take straight away, in 2009 when I had my band and now at the hospital I'm under

Oh and straws are a no no 'usually' in case they cause wind, of course they might do so if you take large sips........

I guess it's something to check, yeah I'm having the sleeve so should be ok but will check :) I wasn't thinking about absorption I was thinking about the size and no solids for first few weeks.

Found info about straws in my pack... ''if you gulp liquids a straw may be preferable to reduce air swallowed''. Guess it depends how you get on... To straw or not to straw... what a dilemma!! :)

I'm sleeved had to crush All tablets which wernt available in liquid ...
And encouraged to use a straw which I did and still do use .
Every hospital has different ideas and views ... x

Yep I was told to get all my meds swapped to liquids or dispersed versions for a month or so after the op but some I couldn't and the taste made me gag so that's why I just went back to tablets. We were told that at the seminar regardless of which surgery you had on the basis it would be easier to take them post op. I'm used to knocking back 10 at a time though and I know some people really struggle with 1 so I found it a lot easier even when I couldn't swallow much liquid if that makes sense?
We should have a FAQ that says "whatever your question, your team probably do it differently to everyone else's" :p
I am a fuller so straws definitely slowed me down. Plus I found it easier to get protein shakes in that way too but I mostly stopped using them after maybe 6 weeks as I'd got used to drinking much slower.

How are all of you with your ops coming up doing?:)

It's weird how the last week before the op is going fast and somewhat dragging at the same time lol. This weekend I am going to look at bathrooms to change the subject in my head for a while. Also trying to make sure second week of diet is as good as the first and not to lose track of the goal!!

It will go so quick and before you know it your post op

Ok haven't found a thread yet for this so starting one off.

Having my sleeve on September 5th at St James Hospital Leeds.

Anyone else along for the ride?
Hi, im at the very early stages, been referred for 3 tier for the area, but as I live too far away from James cook I don't have to attend the seminar. I have my first appt with weight management clinic at friar age Northallerton in 10 days. Did you have the 3 tier referral and what happen? What did it involve and how long did it take?
Sorry for lots of questions.
Also, I can't decide between sleeve and bypass, I'm 21st 5 bmi 49.7 , what made you choose sleeve please if you don't mind me asking.

I wasn't given the option the surgeon told me what would be best for me which I was pleased
about as he is the doctor not me. Could ask the doctor what he would have if he was you!

I didn't have the Tier 3 referral as far as I am aware - hadn't heard of it until i had been on here a while, and still not sure what it is. I too live a long way from the hospital but had to attend one to one's with dietitian a number of times, a psychiatrist, a couple of doctors plus one with my consultant.

I chose the sleeve because i was wanting something permanent and I didn't want the malabsortion from the bypass as I have other issues that have done this in the past.
