The truth and all you need to know about the bypass

Hi All
I am new to this site, just wanted to say a big hello

My doc refered me last week for Gastric surgery, how long will I be waiting before I hear antything ??

Hi, just seen that you are from Hull, they have a great group up there that meets once a week are you a member of that? and fingers crossed your date comes through really soon x

Thank You all for sharing.

I had booked my own WLS on 31 July in Belgium but I cancelled as I was so scared of going alone then not recieving the help on my return. Cancelling the Op was right for me as i have learnt by reading all your posts that I was in no way ready for my op.

The same week that I cancelled I recieved an appointment for my local obesity clinic. I am now waiting for funding. My BMI is 49.9. If I receive funding I then have the wait......... I have been told by the PCT they hope that I will have my op within the year. I hope I have the strength to wait it out. I am very sad at the idea of the wait but what else can I do?

sarah you cancelled for a reason that things did not feel right. I know i have only had to wait 6 months but once told i was i was having a bypass i never once asked how long i would have to wait that way i wouldnt be dissapointed. I know i posted about wether i should phone and ask if i could have it done sooner rather than later due to my work commitments but i had resigned myself to the fact that it would happen when it happens.
good luck
HC

HC everyone is different and to be told right at the start you face around a years wait takes away the element that it could happen sooner. I have the funding but to be told it will be at least six months means that there is no chance of an early date it has a major impact on how a person feels. You have been extremely lucky in how yours went but imagine how it would feel to be told you have to wait a full year. I feel bad enough with 6 months so I cannot begin to imagine how I would feel if it was 12 months, your life is on hold no matter how you try not to let it be it is. I wont even buy a winter coat because that would be like admiting its not going to happen. Everyone reacts and feels different to other people, some can cope and some cant.....xx

Hi HC

thank you for your kind reply.

I understand what you are saying however in my case I am almost disable by a number of health conditions which are due to my weight. I have started another post.

I am very please to see people up here on the losers side as I believe their suffering is coming to an end. I know they will be there for me waiting for me on the losing side. I wish you luck with your WLS surgery I will be waiting here to cheer you along as you make your way to a healthier new you.

Thanks Mark,
I'm glad I'm normal worrying about it! I'm not too scared iof complications-just dying!!lol My surgeon laughed when I asked what my odds were as he has only had one death in 375 ops and that was someone with allsorts of medical problems, whereas I'm healthy and have all the odds in my favour. I warned the person who told me I was being silly about the risk of me dying that I would come back to haunt him if he got it wrong. It's just the fact that it's elective surgery that makes me consider dying whereas if I HAD to have it for an illness then I don't suppose I would have thought twice! I know I'm being silly, but there's always that doubt in the back of my mind..
Do you know if you lose weight faster by avopiding solids after the op for the length that they recommend?

I understand perfectly where yoiu are coming from. I hate going under anaesthetic and am terrified of dying on the operating table (or after for that matter).

I think read too many women's magazines which seem to be full of horror stories bareatric surgery.

I have found this thread to be very helpful and reassuring.

Thank you.

consideration

Hello, I am new to this site and to be honest I am new to chat rooms so please bear with me! I am seriously considering surgery to tackle my ongoing weight problem. I saw a specialist last night as I wanted to ask about the Gastric Band. Due to the fact that I graze as opposed to eating huge meals, he felt that the Gastric bypass was a better option - I just really need to talk to people who have gone through this procedure to find out more. Any info much appreciated. Thanks

Hi December girl and welcome to minis, you might be better starting your own thread as more people may read it. I originally wanted the band but as I am a grazer like you the surgeon recommended the bypass which I had done on saturday just gone. There has been no pain whatsoever, I never needed the morphine drip once and I have five very small scars two are so tiny and close to my boobs I dont think they will be noticable at all. In fact I have had bigger cat scratches. I have been very tired the past few days so having early nights but have also been getting up early and just taking it easy. If you have any questions just ask away we are a friendly helpful bunch on here...xx

Hi December Girl, welcome to Mini's :)

If you want to start a new thread just click 'new thread at the bottom (or at the top) of this page. Very simple. There are lots of guides to how the forum works here - Tutorials - MiniMins.com - Weight Loss Support Forum you might find some of those helpful.

I had my bypass on the 16th July, and as you can see have lost over half my excess weight since then. For me, it has been an amazingly positive experience, very little pain and a smooth journey. I'm very happy now and don't feel like I'm on a 'diet' as such. There are lots of bypass diaries on here which details people's journeys right from first looking for funding (or deciding to self fund) which you might find useful to read.

hi you have put my mind at ease a little,im going to be having the bypass in a few wks,not sure how im feeling at moment,i know i will be healthy and thinergrtttttttt.

Hi everyone, I found reading all these different stories very interesting, I can't wait for my op and I believe you must always stay positive and focused on what it is your having done and more importently why your having it done. As for waiting for dates and funding.....patience, it comes to those who wait. Good luck all.

Hiya Julie, i have just sat for the last hour and a half and read your journey. i feel as though i have known you all my life. the honesty and the loyal friendships you have built up on here are amazing.

I am having bypass hopefully around easter time. i currently weigh about 30st and am 6ft 3. i have done Lighter life 2 yrs ago and lost 17st in 10 months so i cant wait to have my op on the NHS in
Luton and get that slim me back.

I really do hope life starts treating you better, and remember do what you have to do, nothing else matters! nothing tastes or is as good as slim feels and its true.

Keep your chin up, and look after you. all my love and best wishes Hayley x :)

There is a procedure that is intermediate to the band and the bypass. It is called gastric sleeving. Sleeving is simpler and safer than bypass, and has the option of being converted to a full bypass later if needed.

This option is a recent advance and does depend on whether your surgeon has any experience with the procedure.

Best wishes .. Fizz

oh lordie. some of these things are freaking me out! I am having a gastric sleeve on 23 march, and thought I was ok, but reading these has got me shaking! I HATE being faffed about with. I am not bothered about the op itself, but the catheter, the drips, the tubes....that is making me want to cry! (sorry to sound like such a big girl's blouse!)
don't suppose anyone can tell me when they put the catheter in? Before the op or while you are asleep? And what needles/drips/tubes are in you after? (I am SO phobic about such, that I have had 10 weeks of CBT to get to the point where I can even try to go for the op)

Hi Hecate,

I felt very similar, I am hugely needle phobic and this thread freaked me out big time. HOWEVER, my experience was nothing like mentioned in here!

I had a catheter put in during the op, and didn't notice it afterwards. I couldn't have got up to use the loo anyway so was glad of it. They put a drip in my arm when I went down to theatre, and that stayed in until the day after the op. It was appreciated as it kept me hydrated and was a way to get painkillers in. Those were the only things I had! Well apart from the oxygen mask and inflating leg tubes, but they didn't go inside me in anyway lol so they don't count :)

It was all fine. You will be fine. Deep breath and relax!

thanks (again). I was so alarmed by someone saying something about something in their NECK that I shot straight out of my chair and damned near hit the ceiling!

This'll make you laugh - when I first saw surgeon about this surgery, I asked him if there was anyway I could have it with just gas & air! Oh you should have seen his face! But that's the seriousness of my phobia.

Gas & air, I ask you. I bet he's STILL laughing.
